Credentialing 101: How Long Does It Really Take?

If you've started applying to insurance panels, you've probably already found the most frustrating part: the wait. Timelines vary a lot by payer, and knowing what to expect up front saves a lot of stress.

Typical timelines

Most major dental payers, Delta Dental, MetLife, Cigna Dental, Guardian, Aetna Dental, take 60 to 120 days from a complete application to an effective date. State Medicaid dental programs run 30 to 90 days depending on the state and the vendor administering the benefit. Some payers also cap how many applications they process in a given area, so even a flawless application can sit in a queue for weeks before anyone looks at it.

What actually slows things down

Usually it's something small: an expired malpractice policy, a lapsed license, a missing W-9, or a mismatch between your NPPES record and your license. Payers rarely flag these proactively. The application just sits there until someone follows up.

How to speed it up

Keep your license, malpractice coverage, and DEA registration current well before you apply. A lapse mid-application stalls everything. Submit as early as you can (credentialing can often start before your official start date at a practice), and follow up every two to three weeks instead of waiting for the payer to reach out.

Credentialing is mostly persistent follow-up, not complicated paperwork, which is exactly why it's one of the easiest things to hand off. That frees you up to focus on patients while someone else chases the process to completion.
